Henley MBA
commended by Association of MBAs
(January 2010)
The
Henley MBA has now received formal re-accreditation from the Association
of MBAs (AMBA) for the maximum possible term of five years.
Commendations
from AMBA leading to the re-accreditation cover a variety of aspects
including leadership of the business school, programme content,
ambitions, staff, and student interaction. Highlight commendations
include:
• ‘The skilful management of the merger with
Reading, which has created the possibility of a large and diversified major
business school.’
• ‘The thematic coverage and integration of personal development (in the
MBA programme)’
• ‘A good balance of assessment provided through the use of
‘assessment bundles’ and the quality of feedback provided to
students.’
• ‘The evident enthusiasm and accessibility of staff and their
responsiveness to student needs’
• ‘The overall quality of leadership
of the School, including the role of the Subject Area Leaders in
managing teaching resources and ensuring quality and consistency of
standards in the delivery of the MBA.’
Further
recommendations from AMBA are all encouraging and support the School in
its agreed plans to develop the MBA further.
‘I am absolutely
delighted with the commendations made by AMBA’ said Professor Chris
Bones, Dean of
Henley
Business
School
. ‘It is a really excellent outcome for the School and supports all of
the work that many in the school have been involved with over the last
few years to develop our MBA. The recommendations will be taken on board
and we will continue to focus on exceeding the expectations of all.

Henley MBA Starter Workshop in the
UK
for the Third Intake
(November 2009)
Henley
Malta
is proud to announce the start of its third cohort since Allied
Consultants took over the associateship of the new Henley MBA programme
in 2008. This year’s intake consists of 21 managers and executives who
encompass the manufacturing and services sectors in private industries
as well as a number of public service officials. The average age of this
year’s programme members is 34.
The
very first workshop, which is held at Henley-on-Thames in the
UK
, is a means of touching base with the
Business
School
and meeting up with fellow colleagues from around the world. Dr
Susan Rose, the Associate Head of School for Professional Programmes and
Associate Professor in Marketing Management, welcomed the 62 programme
members (from
Malta
,
Germany
and
Ireland
) at the Hambeldon Conference Room. In the evening, during dinner at the
Heyworth Dining Room, Professor Tony Downes, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of
the
University
of
Reading
delivered a short speech and, while welcoming everyone at
Henley
, augured a good start to the three year learning journey.
During
this starter workshop a total of 14 different nationalities were
present, with the Maltese cohort alone representing four of these. This
global mix renders the Henley MBA international in terms of reach and
networking opportunities. The Malta-based group had a great opportunity
to interact with their two counterpart programme members from the German
and Irish intakes, during the workshop as well as during meal times and
at the bar in the evenings.
Dr
Tim Osborn-Jones introduced the module of Personal Development after
which, the workshop moved on to the module of Dynamics of Management,
with Dr Nicola Swan and Trevor Long. The programme members were
challenged to change their way of thinking about established management
practices. This starter workshop serves as the ideal springboard for
further personal and professional development for the programme members.
Practical help and advice from Lorenzo Mule Stagno, the Programme
Director of the Malta-based Henley MBA, was on the agenda in terms of
the on-line learning platform and how best to exploit the resources
available on the
Henley
interactive e-learning environment. During a session specifically
designed for the Maltese cohort, Lorenzo coached the group in study
methods and team working skills. During this same session the programme
members had the opportunity to receive an introduction to the Henley MBA
by Chris Dalton, the Programme Director of the Global MBA at Henley
Business School.
Chris
also delivered a short presentation regarding the change in name from
‘distance learning’ to what is now considered to be the Flexible
Learning Programme. This change came about because the Henley MBA
programme involves a blend of distance learning support and intensive
locally-organised workshops.
Back
in
Malta
, the programme members are already focusing on their first assignment
and eager to put into practice what they are learning.

Henley
Business
School
in Top 500 B2B Superbrands
(10 September 2009)
A
new feather in
Henley
’s cap is its recent inclusion in this year’s Top 500 B2B
Superbrands 2009/10 list compiled by The Centre for Brand Analysis and
published by the Sunday Telegraph. It is one of only ten other Business
Schools featured in this prestigious list and is the only one to make it
from all the business schools represented locally.
Henley
Business
School
can also boast of high rankings in other surveys. It has been rated
among the top 20 MBAs in the world, with number 1 ranking for
Educational Experience, Faculty Quality, Personal Development, Potential
to Network, Student Quality and number 2 for Increase in Salary by the
Economist Intelligence Unit in 2008.
Henley
Business
School
has been in existence for hardly a year, since it was re-branded by a
merger between
Henley
Management
College
and the
University
of
Reading
in August of last year.
Henley
Management
College
had long been a leading international provider of MBA programmes and
executive education, being the first business school to be established
in the
UK
and one of the first in
Europe
. It was established in 1945 by business for business and is one of a
few business schools with triple accreditation (Association of MBAs,
EQUIS and AACSB). The
University
of
Reading
ranked among the top 200 universities in the world, has been a world
leader in international business research, with centres of excellence in
business education for the financial and real estate markets. Together
they now make up one of the largest and best business schools in
Europe
, offering a full range of programmes and a powerful combination of
academic research and thought leadership.
Henley
’s distance learning MBA helps one balance study with all the other
important commitments in his/her life. Whether on the move, on a
flexible work schedule or simply unable to take a lot of time from work,
one can study at any time and in any place. Learning is a blend of
workshops, teamwork and self-study.
The
programme is not a series of seemingly unrelated academic disciplines
but three fully integrated stages representing major business challenges
that build towards the final qualification. The three stages focus on
Managing the Oganisation, Making Choices and Making a Difference with a
final research-based consultancy project (dissertation) in which one
applies the range of skills learned to a real organizational issue or
problem.

Henley
MBA Starter Workshop in the
UK
for Second 2008 Intake
(12 January
2009)
A
group of fourteen Henley MBA programme members, accompanied by Lorenzo
Mulč Stagno, director of Allied Consultants Ltd, the local
Henley
associates, joined two other groups of new students from
Germany
and
Ireland
to attend the 2008 starter workshop at
Henley-on-Thames
.
An
exciting development in this second local cohort of 2008 is the
inclusion of a number of foreigners, giving the course more of an
international touch. The students' occupations vary from managers and
executives to directors operating in various industries, from small
private to large public ones. The students' ages lie between
27 and 53 years.
Chris
Dalton, Director of Studies for the Distance Learning MBA programme,
welcomed the students and general introductions followed. As their
personal tutor, Lorenzo Mulč Stagno then gave a lecture about the use
of the
Henley
interactive website and online facilities as well as an overview of
study and writing skills. Particular attention was also given regarding
the importance of teamwork and group support. There then was an
interactive exercise led by Chris Dalton himself, after which students
were addressed about personal development by Tim Osborn-Jones, Subject
Area Leader for Personal Development at
Henley
Management
College
. The day closed with Professor Roger Palmer, Professor of Marketing and
Management, Associate Head of the School of Management, delivering a
pre-dinner speech.
The
Dynamics of Management Workshop, on the second day, was led by Richard
Lacey – Visiting Executive Fellow. This was under the form of a real
life case study with the students being split up into teams to analyse
aspects and then make presentations about their conclusions at the end
of the day.
The
third day was dedicated to further case analyses and discussions, with
global discussion and case conclusions. The seminar was concluded with a
review of the workshop.
The
students also had the opportunity to network with their peers from other
countries both during the discussions as well as during the breaks and
in the evenings. They expressed satisfaction on the whole workshop and
felt that the networking was as beneficial as the formal content.
Henley
Malta and The Executive Organise a Business Breakfast
(4 September 2008)
Henley
Malta
and The Executive recently organised a business breakfast at the Palace
Hotel in Sliema, for which, some 60 executives and managers from all
sectors participated. During the event Dr. Richard McBain of
Henley
Business
School
presented the results of a research carried out by
Henley
on employee engagement and affective commitment. The study involved a
qualitative exercise with 33 senior and middle managers of four large
organisations, followed by a quantitative study of 1,500 respondents.
A number of interesting findings
resulted from the studies, most of which can provide insights into the
level of engagement an employee feels and how this can be monitored,
evaluated and improved. Overall, the level of engagement seems to be
affected by the job/work, the organisation, the line manager and the
individual. Another interesting finding throughout the study was the
lack of mention of money as a factor for engagement, but was identified
as a factor for disengagement when the individual feels under-paid.
Dr. Richard McBain is currently
Director Specialist Masters and Doctoral Programmes, having also
undertaken Director of Studies roles for the Distance Learning and
consortium MBA programmes at
Henley
. He also teaches on the human resources and research methods modules on
the MBA and runs coaching and mentoring workshops for clients and for
programme members on
Henley
programmes. Dr. McBain also retains a
long-standing research interest in mentoring and has also completed
doctoral research into the impact of mentoring on self-efficacy,
emotional intelligence and academic progression.
Maltese Associates Attend
Henley International Network Meeting.
(7 July 2008)
Mr.
Emanuel Said and Mr. Lorenzo Mulč Stagno, directors of Allied
Consultants Ltd. and associates for Henley Management College together
with Prof Reno Sammut the outgoing associate, attended an International
Network Meeting at Henley on Thames in which various aspects of the MBA
courses were discussed. Also on the agenda was the imminent merger with
Reading University. It was confirmed that this merger would make little
difference in operations and processes, but the awarding body of the
Henley MBA would now be Reading University. The merger should also serve
to take the Henley MBA world rankings, which are already high, to even
higher levels.
Henley is
one of the few business schools around the world that has achieved
triple accreditation for quality from the leading professional bodies in
the USA, Europe and the UK: AACSB, EQUIS and AMBA. The Henley MBA
reputation was further enhanced by the world rankings obtained recently.
The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) last year ranked Henley's Full
Time MBA as 10th in the world, 5th in Europe and 2nd in the UK. This
year the EIU, producing a ranking for distance-learning MBA for the
first time, ranked the Henley MBA as 6th in the world, 4th in Europe and
2nd in the UK, making it one of only two business schools in the
world to rank in the top 10 for both full-time and distance-learning MBA
programmes.
Henley
Management College, having been in existence for more than 60 years, is
one of the oldest business schools in Europe and the first to be
established in the UK. The college boasts some 30,000 alumni of which
over 40% come from outside the UK.
The
Maltese associates expressed satisfaction not only with the outcomes of
the various formal discussions at the International Network meeting, but
also with the fact that they also had the opportunity to share personal
and less formal views with other associates from various countries.
These included countries as far apart as Finland, Trinidad and New
Zealand, which shows the range of the Henley MBA presence in the world.
Henley is present in some twenty countries covering all five
continents.
